Windows NTRAS

Setting up RAS is made pretty easy by NT's new look and feel. This page goes into how to set it up for use with us here at Shore.Net.

Let's assume that you have no RAS installed at all. If you have already installed RAS then you might want to check your settings against the ones here if it isn't working properly.

1.) Start by clicking on the Dial-up Networking icon.

2.) If Dial up networking isn't installed you will see this window (at right) asking you to install it. Go ahead and click install to start the installation.

(Don't forget -- You'll need your Windows NT 4.0 install disks handy to do this).

You'll be asked about your modem. RAS will tell you what modem it intends on using.

If this isn't the one you want to use or you don't already have one installed, click on the Install Modem button and install it in the normal NT/95 way.

This screen confirms the installed modem and allows you to change the Network settings. Click on the Network Settings button.

You'll see your Network Configuration screen. The only network protocol you need bound to your RAS is TCP/IP, so make sure that's the only one checked.

This screen confirms the installation has finished and asks you to reboot the computer. Click on the Restart button to restart the machine.

Now you need to fill in the Dial Up Networking information.

You're going to need to click on the Dial Up Networking icon again.

You'll be asked what to name your phonebook entry. Shore.Net seems logical, but it makes no difference.

It is better to edit the properties manually, so put a check mark in the Phonebook Entries box.

Now you need the Phonebook settings.

You will see the New Phonebook Entry screen.

Your basic Phonebook settings should already be filled in, except the phone number you want to dial.

Your Server settings should look like this. Again, the only protocol you need is TCP/IP, so check the box labeled Enable Software Compression. You'll need to alter the TCP/IP settings, so before moving on, click on the TCP/IP Settings button.
